Local hotspots in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is so much more than the Red light district, coffee shops and stag parties. Amsterdam is very pretty, compact and friendly. It’s a nice city’s to visit with young children. Mossel en Gin, Amsterdam West (hotspot, locals)

If you like mussels, shell-fish and gin like me then this is the place to be – I love it! It’s located in the middle of the Wester Park in Amsterdam West. Their mussels with Roquefort are the best, the lobster is fantastic as well and the staff are super cool and friendly. Visit website

Westergas Terras, Amsterdam West (hotspot, locals, Families)

When the weather is nice in Amsterdam then the parks are the place to be, enjoy the relaxing park-beach vibe in the middle of the City. Westergas terras is one of those places to be on a nice day, they also have a terrace next to the water with bean bags, the perfect place to relax after a day of sightseeing or shopping. This place is super casual and a good place when traveling with kids. The menu is pretty casual to, there are plenty of snacks and sharing platters but also salads, fish and meat dishes. Once a week they have a Thai BBQ. You can also find a cinema, playpark and petting farm with small animals like, pony’s, sheep, goats, pig’s and rabbits in the Wester park. Visit website.

Mystique, Amsterdam centre

Cocktail Bar & Dining, a definate hotspots if you fancy a good dinner and the best cocktail in a stylish setting. Mystique also have lady’s night on Thursday and  Spare ribs night on Wednesday. Visit website

Pllek, Amsterdam North (hotspot, locals, families)

Another super cool hangout away from the tourists. You can reach Pllek on the NDSM terrain with a small ferry from the back of the Central Station. Once there you can enjoy food and drinks all day long, enjoy the sun in one of their lounge chairs and there is plenty of space for children to play. They also have film nights, yoga mornings, DJ’s, live music and Sunday’s there are kids activities. Visit website

Vondeltuin,  Amsterdam center (familias)

A great relaxing place away from the City streets, the Vondeltuin is at the end of the Vondel Park in the middle of Amsterdam. When traveling with kids then a visit to Vondel park is a joy, they can run around, play and feed the ducks.  The Vondeltuin serve sandwiches, salads, pasta and tapas.

 
Cafe Bern, Amsterdam Center (locals)

This place has the best cheese fondu in Amsterdam, nothing fancy just a super casual hotspot for cheese or meat fondu lovers. Visit website

Goat farm, Amsterdam (families)

When traveling with small children then you must find time to visit the goat farm and playground Ridammer hoeve. This farm is on the outskirts of Amsterdam in a large park, Amsterdamse Bos is fantastic for kids, they can play, pet the animals and there are small bottles of milk for sale to feed the small goats. You can also enjoy a nice breakfast or lunch there with lots of homemade goodies and organic products.

Pancake cruise (familie)

Fun for families with small children, cruise around the canals in the evening enjoying pancakes and a buffet. Why not try a typical Dutch savoury pancake with cheese and bacon.

What to do on a rainy day?

It’s alway’s possible to experience a rainy day in Amsterdam, find below some ideas in and around the City.

  • The food hallen in Amsterdam West, street food, music, restaurants and a cinema all indoors in an old converted tram station.
  • Nemo sience museum fun for the whole family next to the Central station.
